Basic understanding of budget development.
This seminar is designed for budget and finance staff involved in preparing budget documents for local governments. Those involved in communicating budgetary data to citizens also will profit from the seminar, as should individuals from legislative, rating-agency, or interest-group backgrounds.
This two-day seminar is designed to provide participants with practical, hands-on guidance on: 1) how to implement the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Best Practices in budgeting; and 2) how to improve the effectiveness of a local government's budget document. The program also incorporates the criteria used in the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program. Numerous examples are drawn from the GFOA's book-length publication, Building a Better Budget Document, which is furnished on site to all participants as part of their course materials.
Those who successfully complete this seminar should be able to:
- Implement GFOA Best Practices in budgeting
- Develop a budget document utilizing GFOA’s Best Practices
- Identify the criteria of the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop to the course.
